Smushed and Unfolded Coils and Twists

This photographic essay is a description of two related processes I've developed using steel bars. The bars used here are one inch round bars forged into octagonal stock. The reason for using octagonal stock is that the edges defining the eight faces of the surface of the bar serve as strain markers to help illustrate the deformational process. I have used these processes with many different kinds of stock (see, for example, the stalk in Lotus Surrealus,Figure 3, Icharus Abdul-Jabbar, and the On the Diamond series in the Sculpture section). After each step of the process I let the bars cool and wire-brushed them for the photos. There is no finish on the bars in these photographs.
